Full update support for Automotive SLI 9670, automatic recovery from interrupted updates

EnactTrust now runs the complete TPM firmware update for the automotive-qualified Infineon SLI 9670, online or offline, and automatically recovers the TPM if an update is interrupted.

Driven by demand from a major German car maker, full update support for the SLI 9670 is now available to every automotive customer.

The Infineon SLI 9670 is the automotive-qualified member of the 9670 TPM 2.0 family, and it sits in vehicle platforms that stay in service for well over a decade. Keeping its firmware current for that whole time has meant vendor tools, multiple manual steps and TPM specialists on hand.

What full update support means

EnactTrust can run the entire update in a single step without manual intervention, or step-by-step using the EnactTrust Direct API:

  1. Check which firmware version the TPM is running.
  2. Get the right update for that TPM.
  3. Apply it and bring the TPM back into normal operation.

There are two ways to deliver the update:

  • Online: EnactTrust connects to the EnactTrust cloud, regularly checks whether a newer TPM firmware version is available, downloads it and applies it.
  • Offline: EnactTrust applies the update from a locally provisioned package, for example one delivered by the vehicle’s own software update process. No connectivity to the EnactTrust cloud is required.

Either way, there is no vendor tool sequence to follow and no TPM commands for your team to learn.

Automatic recovery from interrupted updates

In a vehicle, an update can be interrupted at any moment. The ignition is switched off, the 12V supply dips, or a control unit resets in the middle of the procedure. An interrupted TPM firmware update can leave the TPM unable to serve the rest of the system until the update is completed, and on a fleet that turns into workshop visits.

EnactTrust recovers the TPM from an interrupted update automatically. When the system comes back, EnactTrust completes the update and returns the TPM to normal operation, without manual intervention, a service tool or a technician.

The same recovery applies to power loss in an EV charger, a pulled board in a gateway, or any other reset during the update.

Built for ECU-class hardware

Control units have tight compute and memory budgets, so the SLI 9670 support is built on the same principles as the rest of EnactTrust:

  • No TPM Software Stack. EnactTrust uses a proprietary solution with the smallest footprint possible.
  • Option RTOS. EnactTrust runs as a FreeRTOS task and slots into an existing RTOS application next to your other tasks.
  • Option Bare-metal. For safety-critical systems, EnactTrust runs bare-metal, without an RTOS.
  • Hardware-agnostic. A thin integration layer connects EnactTrust to your SPI bus, a timer and the storage that holds the update package, so it runs on any microcontroller.
  • Ready-to-use. EnactTrust is delivered as a statically built binary with integration code for your platform, and the integration takes a few lines of code.

A reference integration is available for the Infineon CYW920829M2EVK evaluation kit, so your team can see a complete SLI 9670 update running before porting it to your own hardware.

Get started

The SLI 9670 has long been on the list of supported TPM 2.0 models, alongside the SLB 9670 and SLM 9670. What is new is full update support with automatic recovery from interrupted updates.
